6.7 Nursing Assessment - Access Types

To record information about the type of access used for treatment, go to the Nursing Assessment and scroll down to 'Access Types'

Cannula

If 'Cannula' is ticked, more fields for data entry will display

Click the '+' sign to add the number of attempts to cannulate the patient. This can be added to be other users to show the difficulty found when inserting a cannula in this patient. Users should enter 'Yes' or 'No' for attempts to show whether that attempt was successful or not. The attempts will be available on a report that is visible to the relevant nurse and Nurse Unit Manager.

Portacath

Different fields will show if Portacath is selected. The user can record their access attempts for portacath in the same way as for Cannula attempts.

CVC

As with Cannula and Portacath, selecting CVC access will provide relevant fields for that type.

Venesection

For 'Venesection' details about blood flow and location of cannula can be entered here. For details of the volume of blood removed, see the Drug Administration record when this can be recorded.

Intravesical

Fields relevant to indwelling catheter insertion display if Intravesical is selected.

Subcutaneous

For Subcutaneous injections, options allow the user to choose the location or more than one location if needed

Other

If another access type is used that doesn't fit the categories already described, select Other for generic options for entry of the details
