7.7 Drug Administration - How to add a drug - nurse-initiated, standing orders, phone orders

To add a medication to the drug chart, click the plus + sign at the top of the list of medications

When the popup opens, click on the drop-down list to choose either Phone, Standing or Nurse-Initiated Medication, then click the Lookup button to search MIMS:

  • When the MIMS medication search opens, type in the name of the medication you need to add.

  • To refine the search to a smaller list, you can enter the route of administration

  • Click on the name of the medication to add it to Drug Admin, ensuring you've chosen the correct medication with the correct route

  • Once the correct medication has been selected, the popup will close and you'll return to the main drug admin page

  • The medication details will display in the window.

  • Next, add the dose and frequency required and any instructions needed

  • If this is a standing or nurse-initiated order, there is no need to sign that you've heard the order over the phone. If it is a phone order, click the icon next to 'Heard by' to record that you've heard the phone request to add the drug. A second nurse can click the icon next to 'Confirmed by' to record their name as well.

  • Then save and close the window.

  • Back on Drug Administration, the new drug will display with the signatures to show you've heard and confirmed the phone order.

  • For Standing Orders and Nurse-initiated drugs, there will only be the usual boxes to tick to sign for drug administration for the new drug, unlike with Phone orders.
