17.1 Creating a new protocol from scratch - Part 2
1.e Create Steps (summary page)
Next create your steps of various kinds e.g. Appointments, Medications, Procedures, Diagnostic Tests etc. You can click Add, Add, Add, to get your step list on the page before entering the data.
Always link other steps to an appointment when applicable so that (e.g.) if drugs are administered at an appointment, the medication step always moves with the appointment and can’t be changed separately. If users forget to select ‘recalculate future dates’ when moving protocols, the medications etc that should be associated with an appointment may get left behind.
The linkage dropdown does not appear for appointment steps.

‘Plus Time’ is the time between steps and refers to the number of days from the most recent step preceding it. i.e. if the last step was Day 2 Medication and the next step is Day 8 Appointment the plus time will be 6 days.
Make sure you carefully check the link to step (previously "associate step") and plus time entries on the step page prior to publication. Don't forget if drug administration occurs on the same day as an appointment, the plus time must be left as zero days.

Once you have saved the steps you will see in the tree menu far left that your step names are all there with relevant icons. You can move them up and down at the Steps summary page easily if they are in the wrong order.
NOTE the blue tick appears over the top of the icon once you have saved the step detail for the first time. It may not mean you have finished creating that step.
To ensure your protocol steps are in the right order, the Up and Down 'v' allows you to move the Step to the place it belongs one step at a time
1.f Step detail
You can now build big repetitive protocols quickly :-) - here is how.
1. Create the detail for a step as per below examples for appointment and medication by clicking on the step name. This will open the fields to enter the visit reason, type, length of appointment, whether a bed/chair is required and whether it should create an appointment in the site's calendar. Other step types work the same way.

2. Click on the Day 1 Medication step to open the details page to enter medications to be administered on this day.

Ensure that you add the medications in the order you wish them to be administered. For each medication enter the dose, units, volume, duration and vehicle if applicable.
If you need to move the medications into the right order, use the large and small arrows to the right of the medication line to move them up or down the page.
The ‘Allow dose reduction’ box is checked by default, unless you explicitly wish the users not to be allowed reduce the dose. The ‘Allow Substitute’ box is also ticked by default as this allows the user to swap the medication for a preferred one at the point of prescribing. To clearly display information you wish the user to see, enter into Instructions.
This will always show on the protocol.
For extra information about the medication, enter into ‘Notes’.
Once you have created a step or two that is to be repeated in future steps, save the page(s) so that the blue tick appears over the top of the step icon left.
You can now copy the details from one step to another. Open a step that is not yet configured and in the case of an appointment step, click on it will copy the various appointment parameters to the new step. Select "Copy from" in the far right and select the step with data you want to clone.
In the case of medications, if you go to the new step the button will say "Append from" - see below. If you already have meds on the new step, it will add to the list. If your new medication step is empty, the "append from" will copy medications from the existing step.
All meds from the selected step will appear in the same order and with the same dose, volume, instruction parameters as the step in the "append from" dropdown.
