9. Orphan (unused) Drugs
- If the treatment is deferred or cancelled after the medication has been received, the medication may be tracked through Pharmacy Admin and be ‘held’ in an Orphan (unused) Drugs folder. The expiry date is automatically calculated from information previously entered in Pharmacy Admin for that medication. If the medication is able to be matched to a future patient on medication name, route, diluent and container, it will display next to that patient’s name in Pharmacy Orders with an Unused symbol. Medications are not matched on Dose so this can be manually determined by the pharmacist. This allows the compounded medication to be used by another patient before it expires.
- When an Orphan Drug expires, it disappears from the Orphan Drugs list and no longer displays next to a new patient.
Click on the Unused symbol to display matched medications available in storage that have not expired.
· Click the medication line to choose from the list of available medications. The order will transfer to the new patient requiring the same treatment.
· The Reused Drug symbol will then display to the left of the medication on the Pharmacy Orders list. The order details for the Reused drug will display to the right.
What if the new patient the Orphan Drug is allocated to, is also cancelled?
- The medication will return to the Orphan Drug folder, ‘Unused’, next to the patient the medication was originally ordered for. The medication can be used by the original patient if required or used again via the Unused drug symbol next to another new patient.
